I think pain and numbing oneself is one thing, and that is undersatndable.
Our society does not support people to feel pain, fear, anger and similar. All kind of negative feelings must be coverd up to be an inconspicuous, or even better - successful person. So A little (or much) bit of alcohol is allowed and appreciated to forget all the pain and pressure.
The other thing is that alcohol is a addiction provoking substance.
It competes with the same neural receptors like orgasms, love, bonding, attachment, happyness.
So - you even do not need to be in pain or frightend to get used to the benefits of alcohol.
But then - you might get lost in the dentrimenal effects of it, too.
Especially when you combine these two factors: drinking is addictive and makes you go under the radar of pain and fear. You function perfectly. Society expects you to say yes to the benefits of alcohol.
And it does not educate you in the real costs of it.
When one gets addicted, then the "good" society says - it was his / her own fault.
Coming from what I said earlier - this is nothing but collective denial.
For me, it sums up being a presenting symptom rather han anything else.
Thank you so much for writing this article! I hope it spreads virally!
